KS3 Curriculum Overview 2023-24
Year 7
Autumn Term: Aliens
Using Yinka Shonibare as inspiration, students explore concepts associated with feeling alien and notions of foreign cultures. Students work collaboratively on a series of drawing and C&C exercises before creating an alien sculpture. The alien sculpture is decorated with patterns reflecting each students’ cultural heritage.
Spring Term: Identity
During this project students explore identity and create images that reflect ideas about themselves. Students work from observation, memory and imagination. Each student also creates a ceramic self-portrait that explores abstraction and Picasso’s interpretation of African masks.
Summer Term: Narrative
Pupils explore the themes of subverted fairy tales and narrative. They create images that interpret narratives from fairy tales, working from observation, memory and imagination
Year 8
Autumn Term: Canopic Jars
During the project students investigate Egyptian Art (in particular canopic jars) and create a clay casket with a sculpted animal head. Students also develop their knowledge of ancient Egyptian beliefs and the afterlife.
Spring Term: Alien’s Guide To London
Project takes direct inspiration from Ellen Harvey’s piece, The Alien Guide to the Ruins of Washington, D.C. Students create a visual tour of London through alien eyes. Responses could include reconstructions and interpretations of such sites as Buckingham Palace, the Victoria Memorial, and Parliament buildings.
Summer Term: Inside Outside
An exploration of colour and pattern in depicting interior and exterior spaces. The project allows students to explore painting, colour mixing and collage. Artists include Henri Matisse and Raphael Adjetey Adjei Mayne.
Year 9
Autumn Term: Icons
An examination into how artists have responded to iconic figures with reference to Pop art and Street art in particular. Students explore different printing processes to create a layered portrait of their own icon in the style of Shepard Fairey.
Spring Term: Metamorphosis
Students learn about the work of the Surrealists, particularly Max Ernst and his collages. They develop an understanding of why artists use collage and / or assemblage to convey a greater message. They will use this knowledge to develop detailed, imaginative collages, drawings and sculpture.
Summer Term:
Life Changing Objects
Post Pandemic, relationships to objects have shifted. A new landscape of masks, social distancing now exists. Students work on ideas based on the significance of objects in their lives, the dependencies of these objects and how their meanings changed over the pandemic.
