Why study GCSE Fine Art?
Fine Art defines and promotes visual literacy. Visual literacy enables us to communicate and comprehend successfully and meaningfully in an increasingly image-saturated world. Fine Art makes use of critical thinking, imagination and expression.
Creating and making develops a confidence to take risks, an ability to solve problems, self-belief, autonomy of thought and a sense of identity. The job market wants creative people who are lateral and not always linear thinkers, people with a growth mind-set, and people with transferable skills, confident working in both teams and as individuals, and unafraid to take risks.
The creative industries deliver economic, social and reputational value. They add over £100bn to the UK’s economy, export £46bn in goods and services worldwide and are growing at twice the rate of the general economy.

Eduqas Syllabus Art and Design– Fine Art 1FA0
Coursework: The coursework component is worth 60% of the overall grade.
Coursework Project 1: Protest and Survive
Students are set an introductory task to the first coursework project during the Summer holiday at the end of year 9. The first coursework project is teacher led and students produce a two dimensional and three dimensional outcome in response to the theme.
Coursework Project 2: Time & Place
Students work is based around the theme of “Time and Place”. Students focus on a place or landscape that has an important memory for them and combine this with figurative work to produce a painting project about a memory or memories
Coursework Project 3: Past, Present & Future
Year 10 art trips take place during the final week of June to support this project. Tasks are set for completion during the Summer holidays. This final coursework unit encourages more independent responses from pupils as students negotiate their project’s development with their teacher. The project ends in a mock exam before Christmas in Year 11.
Year 11 Spring Term:
All previous coursework projects are revisited and developed. The final coursework deadline is the last week before the February half term.
The exam paper is distributed during the week before the February half term, giving approximately ten weeks to prepare. Pupils will be taken to an exhibition relevant to the exam title during the Spring term to support their development towards a final piece.
Exam:
Students complete a 10 hour practical exam during May. THERE IS NO WRITTEN EXAM. They also put up a display of their work for end-of-course moderation and exhibition. There is a celebration evening where parents, carers and friends can see the work.
