GCSE Photography Exam 2018: Fragments
Fragments is the 2018 title for the GCSE Photography exam project (Unit 2). You will have a period of 8-10 weeks (plus the Spring half term and Easter holiday) to develop your ideas through preparatory studies before spending two days in the studio realising your final outcome as part of the 10 hour, controlled assessment. You should aim to be ambitious in your final outcome and presentation.
The exam paper is full of ideas to help you get started. Your photography teachers will also set class and home work tasks that will enable you to have the best start possible for your exam project. Make sure everything is documented clearly on your weebly.

Exhibition Visit - Andreas Gursky at the Hayward Gallery
Gursky, known for his large-scale, often spectacular pictures that portray emblematic sites and scenes of the global economy and contemporary life, is widely regarded as one of the most significant photographers of our time.
Driven by an interest and insight into ‘the way that the world is constituted’, as well as what he describes as ‘the pure joy of seeing’, Gursky makes photographs that are not just depictions of places or situations, but reflections on the nature of image-making and the limits of human perception. Often taken from a high vantage point, these images make use of a ‘democratic’ perspective that gives equal importance to all elements of his highly detailed scenes.
This exhibition features around 60 of the artist’s ground-breaking photographs from the early 1980s through to his most recent work, and includes some of his most iconic pictures such as Paris, Montparnasse (1993) and Rhine II (1999, remastered 2015).

Create an account on Pinterest (https://uk.pinterest.com). This is a brilliant way to search for inspiration. You simply search for different, related themes, photographers or techniques and 'pin' them. Here is the link to Fortismere board for the exam theme: Beginning and/or End
Zoom out, screen shot your collection of images and present on your weebly as an image and embed as a link (you will have to make the 'board' public to do this). We will come back to this once the set tasks are complete. Keep adding to this board over the course of the project. Task 1 - Fragments of a city
Anastasia Savinova is a russian-born artist living in Sweden. A background in architectural studies led her to create these large scale photo collages. Each collage is comprised of multiple layers of photographs shot in various European capital cities.
The series is titled “Genius Loci”, which according to the Romans was a protective spirit of a dwelling, takes on a more contemporary meaning which refers to a location’s distinctive atmosphere. Savinovas’s collages are more than a collection of contrasting doors, windows, and roof lines, they explore the structure of life in their connection with the land and the spirit of the place.
Sun Ji, a Shanghai-born artist whose photo collages suggest a nuanced view of the city’s past and present. A curator says the 29-year-old artist’s two-part “Memory City” series is “part cubist collage and part hyperreal landscape.” In one work from his “Memory City I” series, Sun juxtaposes black-and-white photographs of factories, smokestacks, and industrial errata. Glimpsed from across an art gallery, the kitchen-window-sized collage resembles a real photograph. But move closer, and the skewed lines of perspective and improbably dense arrangement of buildings reveal a whimsical critique of China’s late-twentieth-century economic “miracle.”

Using the images of buildings that you took over half term create a series of fragmented landscapes make sure pay attention to the foreground and the background of the picture. You can do this either through photoshop using the Palgonal laso tool to cut out your shapes or do it physically by printing out your images and then cutting them up
Success criteria - Three created landscapes using a minimum of 6 different locations. The buildings must show a clear foreground and back ground and the layers must merge without looking fake.

The infinite nuances of concrete, make us aware of the wealth of the material and of the remains left by the humans and by Time passing by. Even if the architectures seem austere, spaces seeming uninhabited, dehumanised, Cornillet creates a particular poetry and a mesmerising mysticism.

Task 2 - Fragmented Portraits
Erwin Blumenfeld, is regarded as one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century. An experimenter and innovator, he produced an extensive body of work throughout his thirty-five year career including black and white portraits and nudes, celebrity portraiture, advertising campaigns and his renowned fashion photography. Born in Berlin in 1897, Blumenfeld drew early inspiration from the Dadaists, incorporating experimental techniques like solarization, multiple exposures, and photomontage into his darkroom practice
Using the work of Erwin Blumenfeld as inspiration create a number of different fragmented portraits
Use panes of glass and different gels to create a number of digital portraits. As well as still images, try capturing a moving portrait in the style of the two vimeo clips shown below

Kieron Cropper earns his surname in his craft, cutting and cropping magazines, books, and photographs and making them into surreal collages that are more than the sum of their parts. He creates fragmented worlds inspired by the surrel album art that informed his childhood. His repertoire ranges from fields that grow planets, to beautifully re imagined kaleidoscopic women. Each work is salvaged from reams of analog mediums, filtered through his brain, and reassembled in Photoshop.
He uses a mix of analog and digital techniques to create artwork, including: craft knives, vintage magazines, old books, photographs, scanned textures, and of course, Photoshop.

Half Term Homework

Take a journey around London and document fragments of the city these could be in order or take a more random uncontrolled feel. The images that you take will be used in your class tasks when you return after half term. Below are two films that may give you inspiration

Task 3 - Fragments of a person
This task is about how you can convey a storey or information about a person. You need to create a series photographs that focuses on aspects of a person. The most obvious path to do this is to show how a person looks but your task is to go beyond the obvious and look at ways you can tell a storey about a person and their identity
You could think about a hero or someone that you admire. You might think about a memory of a person possibly someone who has died. You could represent them through objects or places or places that they go. Below are some examples of past students work who have documented people and their lives

The Day-to-Day Life of Albert HastingsKaylynn Devney
When Albert Hastings was eighty-five years old, photographer KayLynn Deveney moved near his small flat in Wales. KayLynn took notice of the small rituals and routines gardening, laundry, grocery shopping that made up Bert's life. A friendship slowly developed as KayLynn began photographing fragments of Bert's day. The two developed a simple yet effective method of storytelling with KayLynn's images and Albert's handwritten text and the project evolved into "The Day-to-Day Life of Albert Hastings" a poignant and profound chronicle of aging, living alone, and the small things that make up our daily lives. Containing seventy-eight photographs along with poems written by Bert, his clock drawings, and personal family photographs, "The Day-to-Day Life of Albert Hastings" gives the reader a glimpse into one man's life. We can only imagine what stories are left untold. |

1 - In her series "Cat Lady" Frankie documented her neighbour, she not only took portraits of the lady but also her environment and the unusual items she found in the house.
2 - In a second project she took a series of portraits of her family but asked them to pick items that they thought represented them. These items were then placed alongside their portraits.

FRAGMENTS is a short experimental film made in collaboration with dancer Jordan Robson. We improvised fragments of private performances in a cold and empty city contrasted with snippets of private moments of contemplation and movement not quite clearly seen.

In order to show a good range of experimentation, start by taking 3 sets of different observations in response to 3 ideas based on your research. It is important to show refinement of ideas and techniques throughout the project. Make sure annotation considers subject, concept, approach, technique, formal elements etc as appropriate.
AO3 - RECORD
Remember that we are looking for a good technical and compositional understanding in your work, along with a clear explanation of ideas. This is where you can gain marks for your control of media. You can also gain marks for research and collecting of resources however, only collect what you need to move on practically.
AO4 - REALISE
Develop and refine your best ideas further working towards an exhibition outcome, which will be completed during your examination period (12-hours)
