PORTRAIT TRANSFORMATION
In this project, you will experiment with a number of ways of transforming the portrait using different photographic and experimental techniques. At the beginning of the project, you will be given a number of set task designed to teach you different techniques and then you will be expected to develop your own personal ideas. Throughout the project, you will be introduced to different photographers and images that link with the title 'Portrait Transformations' and expected to research further into their work to help you develop your ideas. Finally, you will produce a final outcome that showcases the best of your ideas and can be exhibited.
Initial Task
Go through the pinterest page below and choose your three favourite photographers. For each photographer upload three images and analyse the images in full.

To produce a series of double exposure portraits that show both man and nature and man and the city
Task
1) Take a series of portraits on the white studio background experiment with different people and viewpoints.
2) Use some of your environments shots for your previous project and then merge these with your portraits shots. Follow the youtube clips / Powerpoint to create a successful outcome.
Choose three of your favourite Jasper James / Christopher Relander images and analyses them in full under your work
Homework
Take a set of observation of an enviroment that you feel would work as a double exposure portrait choose bewteen the city and nature. Then take a series of portraits of your family that can then in turn be used to develop the technique further and demonstrate a refinement in the technique learned in class
Success criteria - Students must show
A minimum of two portraits that demonstrate strong photoshop skills
The two images must merge while at the same time both parts still need to be very visable
Print screens of process need to be shown

Gordon Magnin is an LA based artist who uses fashion images and turns them into a unique collage of "altered found images" with his use of geometric patterns. His background consists of a Masters degree from the Southern California Institute of Architecture, a bachelors of science in structural engineering from the University of Nevada, meaning that his skill is entirely self taught and his experience is fewer than other artist who have manipulated images for a longer length of time to get to this level of skill.
He describes his work as "precise, intricate, geometric and destruction". His alteration of single images using precise geometric cuts and operations completely re structure the form of the original photos, and due to the majority of his photographs being portraits, the repositioning of geometric shapes cause deceptions at first sight as the eye is not used to features of the face being in strange places, which is what makes his work so unique and individual. His use of black and white colouring accentuates the features of the face even further due to the quality and use of shadow in his photographs.
His aim of work is to break down the expectations of perfect looking models and to challenge the industry's perception of beauty (he says "he tends to make the beautiful ugly") who said that his work was too extreme for them. He uses similar digital manipulation of images with exactly the same concept as when models would be altered to look unrealistically fake in campaigns and advertisements etc but I believe exaggerates that to mock the industry.

The Photographic Object
Often, printing photographs is simply the first step. Artists and photographers alike create pieces of work by physically working into their images with a variety of materials and techniques. They can work in many ways: Sculpture , Installation based , Collage , Painting , Mixed media Lesson Objectives
To gain an understanding of different physical experiments that can be used in photography. To gain an understaning of the work of Lucas Simoes and use this knowledge to create a series of experimental portraits. Lesson Outcomes Students to have produced a series of portraits that use different experimental processes shapes to create a unique set of images Lucas Simões is an independent artist based in São Paulo, with a background in architecture and design. With great inventiveness Simoes uses sure materials such as maps, books and photographs, which he then folds, cuts and deconstructs into new forms. 'In my work the materiality of the supporting medium is important. The process of making the support a part of the work is achieved through experiences it is subjected to, such as burning, cutting, distorting or diluting, which at it's most extreme, can destroy the subject'. In all Simoes' many constructive collages or works his intention to intervene in the original meaning of an object or image and create a new representation that oscillates between beauty and strangeness, movement and depth. As well as distortion of images, Lucas Simoes removes and replaces features but sometimes leaves the frame of the face so not to overdo the picture.
Task 1
Create a photographic relief in the style of contemporary photographer, Lucas Simoes 1.Take several photographs of a person. (You only need head and shoulder shots. Try to capture different facial expressions.) 2. Print these out approximately A6 size. 3. Fold them without creasing the image and attach the photographs together. If this is too difficult then cut the images into strips and create a flat collage. Or: 1. Take three photographs of three different people. 2. Print these out A4. 3. Cut through each layer to reveal the image beneath. You can use a geometric grid as a stencil for this ormore random shapes. PHOTOGRAPH OR SCAN YOUR WORK AND PRESENT IT ON YOUR WEEBLY. INCLUDE AN EXPLANATION OF WHAT YOU DID AND INCLUDE THREE IMAGES BY SIMOES HIMSELF WITH FULL ANALYSIS Success criteria - Students must show
A minimum of two portraits that demonstrate use of at least two different experimental processess Photographs of process needs to be shown WWW and EBI must be used at the end of the section Strand Response
You have now responded to Four different strands within your Portrait Transformation project. Each strand should be represented by a range of varied responses and show clear links to the work of other photographers. All work must be finished before you can move forward. Task Look back over each strand and with the help of your teacher decide which one of three ideas shown below you wish to expand. When you have decided write yourself a brief describing how you intend to take the project forward 1) Create three double exposed portraits use different portraits and three different locations. Think about showing a mixture of man made and natural environments.
2) Build on the knowledge gained in the previous task create three new portraits in the style of lucas Simoes . Each portrait should be printed and have a minimum of three layers and contain different geometric shapes. Experiment with different view points and colours in-between the layers.
3) Expand the work that you started in the set tasks and create a set of three new images that display a link to the work of Gordin Magnin. The new images must display a refined set of shapes that show a strong understanding of the photoshop technique required to create the work.
